Who We Are

At Steps, we can’t help but be proud of our achievements after more than a quarter of a century in the business of promoting learning and behaviour change.

Since Steps was founded almost 30 years ago, we’ve developed into a global consultancy, delivering high-quality, high-impact behaviour change programmes which reflect local cultures and languages. Our highly skilled and experienced global team has one focus: working in partnership with our clients to achieve behavioural change.

We work globally with clients, using interactive drama and creative learning techniques - including live, virtual and using media - to achieve behavioural change and inspire people to act differently.

Drama Based and Experiential Learning solutions in People, Culture & Behaviour aspects.

What’s in a Name?

The founders of Steps met in 1992 while role playing for the student doctors at Guy’s Hospital Medical School. They played over-talkative patients, silent patients and patients who had to hear some bad news about their state of health. A meeting place had had to be selected where the actors could assemble on the morning of these courses. It was finally decided that the most convenient, and easily found, location was the flight of steps up to the main entrance of the medical school. Actors would receive a communication ‘Please meet us on the steps of the medical school…’ And those ‘Steps’ gave us our name.

Our biggest achievement

We’re a global enterprise, with teams in the UK, USA, Asia Pacific and India, and we’ve delivered in over 70 global locations. We’re focused on outcomes; searching for and devising techniques and materials to bring about sustained behaviour change. As we we’ve grown over the years, and continue to change and adapt, one thing remains constant: our clients tell us that working with us is a fun, friendly, professional experience – and this is our proudest achievement of all.

Our Team

Every member of the Steps team is committed to working in partnership with our clients to achieve behavioural change.

We’re a close knit, global team, with native and fluent speakers of a range of languages – and we love a chat! Given that we have teams in the UK and Europe, India and the Middle East, the USA and Asia Pacific, there’s every chance that we’re not too far from you – so just give us a call and let’s start the conversation.

Our Facilitators and Coaches

We’re extremely proud of our highly experienced actor facilitator and coaching team of professionally trained individuals with a wealth of industry experience. Each person specialises in the application of theatre methodologies within a learning and development context. All have experience of applying learning models and theories alongside drama-based content to enhance the learning experience and further embed training.

Quality and experience

We carefully select each member of our team after a thorough audition process. They bring their skills (as role players, facilitators, coaches and writers) to add value and depth to Steps’ programmes. We hold regular engagement forums, including development workshops in a variety of subject areas, as part of our ongoing facilitator and coaching team development, Not only does this maintain our high quality standards, but it also gives us the opportunity to listen to feedback and take collective responsibility for creating the most robust methods to deliver programmes.

A Global Team

We have teams based across the globe: from London to Tokyo, Sydney to New York and everything in between. Working with any Steps facilitator or coach is a great, fun, friendly, professional experience; no matter where in the world they’re based they go through the same rigorous training process to ensure all programmes are delivered to the same high quality and consistency.

Diverse

The diversity of our actor facilitator pool allows us to fully and credibly reflect the diversity within our clients’ organisations. We can provide team members with specific industry, sector or subject knowledge/experience, as well as the capability to deliver in a range of world languages.

Our coaches are drawn from a wide range of backgrounds – from professional actors and learning specialists to senior business people. We have an established process to ensure that the coach/coachee chemistry is right, that our focus remains business-centred so desired outcomes are clear from the start, and evaluation is stringent and informative.

What We Do

We work collaboratively with clients across the globe to consult on, design, and deliver, highly engaging learning programmes both live and virtual, that bring about behavioural change within organisations.

Our Steps to Change methodology is the foundation for everything we do, and we build on this to create learning programmes that are grounded in, and reflective of, organisational reality.  Experience and research shows us that holding a mirror up to the world that your people inhabit every day is hugely powerful in helping them to recognise their own – and others’ – behaviours.  Only when they See and Own these behaviours can they develop the skills, confidence and motivation to Change and Live new ones.

We use our experience and our insight-driven approach to inspire and challenge thinking, always in the spirit of true partnership.

What we’re known for…

We pride ourselves on our flexibility and our ability to challenge our own, and others’, thinking. We are probably best known for our work in:

– Diversity, Inclusion & Unconscious Bias
– Performance Management
– Leadership & Management
– Customer/Client Service
– Values and Ethics

Our Steps to Change methodology is highly transferable, and therefore can be applied to any behavioural change programme.

Scalable

Whether it’s for 10 members of your C-suite, cohorts of middle managers or a scalable digital experience for thousands of employees across global territories, we’ll partner with you to establish clear outcomes and success measures, then co-create a learning experience that succeeds in bringing about the change you seek.

We’ll also ensure that the support and reinforcement is there to help you successfully embed and sustain the change, enabling it to become your new ‘business as usual’.

Diversity & Inclusion and Unconscious Bias

People are an organisation’s greatest asset, and many high-performing 21st-century businesses now understand the benefits that both a diverse workforce and a truly inclusive culture can bring. This includes the ability to better reflect and respond to client/customer needs, greater scope for innovation and fresh ideas, and, as is increasingly reported, direct benefits to the bottom line. Diversity Training via theatre is one effective way to foster this inclusive culture and drive these positive outcomes

Performance Management Services

Your leaders and managers want to do the best by their people – to motivate, nurture and develop their teams, enabling them to succeed. But are they equipped with the skills and confidence to make this happen? Are they able to engage people at an honest, adult level with the right kind of constructive feedback? Read More

Customer Service

When thinking about client and customer service, organisations often begin with brand and what they want their ‘brand experience’ to look and feel like for their customers.  We instead focus on individuals and the behaviours they display to help shape the client and customer experience.

We immerse ourselves in your world so we come to understand the unique service challenges that you, your customers and your employees face. Using our Steps to Change, we will work with you to create a culture that prioritises customer and client needs.

Leadership & Management

Effective leaders and managers understand the climate and context in which they operate. They understand their people and they instinctively know how to adapt their style and approach in order to enable them to fulfil their potential and bring their very best to what they do.

The pursuit of the corporate strategy (results, outcomes, improvements etc.) can drive a very ‘command and control’ culture.  Many programmes focus on the (useful) theories and strategies of effective leadership and management, but one distinct area is often missing; how to make the learning really Live for each individual as they lead the organisation and work with the teams and individuals within it.

Steps’ philosophy is to engage the ‘hearts and minds’ of leaders and managers, allowing them to understand what it really means in practice to lead the organisation and be a culture carrier in the context of who they are and their role.

Coaching Skills

There are few management skills that have greater impact on an individuals  performance, motivation and development than coaching. Effective coaching can transform operational decision making, team discussions, client meetings and career and personal development

We believe the GROW model is an effective and well respected coaching method to help people achieve goals and solve problems. Its techniques are easily understood and practised both one-to-one and in groups.

We combine this with our Steps to Change, enabling individuals to develop their coaching skills.

Values and Ethics

An organisation’s values and ethics represent who they are and the way they do business. To keep your organisational culture healthy, you would expect (and need!) your people to live your values and to follow your commitment to high ethical standards. For those in relevant environments, it not only shows good corporate governance, it will also contribute to regulatory requirements (e.g. SMCR for financial institutions). Read More

What else?

We specialise in experiential learning and behavioural change.  Individual behaviour sets the tone and the tone sets the culture.  For organisational culture to be an asset, its vital that people are engaged at an individual level with their own development and change journey.

Given that behaviour impacts every aspect of business and working life – we create programmes to suit a range of topic areas, using a consistent Steps to Change approach.  We work in partnership with our global clients to understand, design to, and deliver on, objectives in a way that’s credible, creative and insight-driven.  Our programmes allow individuals to first SEE and OWN the change that’s required, before equipping them with the skills and confidence to CHANGE and LIVE the new behaviours.  In this way, we move beyond great learning and development to deliver real and lasting change within organisations.

Psychological Safety and Health & Safety Behaviours

Organisations are increasingly making the link between physical and psychological safety in the workplace and in our view these two subject areas are inextricably linked. We are passionate about helping organisations to create a positive health and safety culture and to explore the intersection between health and safety and an inclusive corporate culture, as a critical aspect to unlocking positive results in both people and performance. Our experiential approach creates a unique offering that will bring safety behaviours to life, enabling your people to not only understand organisational policies and compliance, but critically to See and Own the behaviours that will truly embed a culture of psychological and physical safety. Mental Health Conversations

In recent years, there has been increasing awareness of the importance of making mental health conversations part of business as usual within organisations. Globally, an estimated 12 billion working days are lost every year to anxiety and depression, costing over US$ 1 trillion in lost productivity (WHO, 2022) – and we know that the impact of the pandemic on mental health was significant and, for some, long lasting. As illustrated by inclusion of mental health in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the link between mental wellness and productivity, purpose and potential is clear – so how do we bring this conversation into our workplaces in a way that supports individuals, develops team understanding and strengthens our organisations overall? Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Work

According to a 2022 ILO study, over 6% of those in employment globally have experienced sexual violence and harassment at work. In many countries (though not all), sexual harassment and misconduct is unlawful. It also constitutes a breach of regulation in some sectors and, in financial and legal sectors, is increasingly viewed as a means of determining someone’s fitness and propriety in professional life. Across the globe there are cultural nuances that determine social and behavioural ‘norms’ with regard to behaviours, so how do we navigate effective and healthy conversations to prevent sexual harassment in our organisations in a way that’s engaging, meaningful and delivers a positive impact for colleagues? How We Do It

We approach what we do with creativity, passion and with a commitment to achieving lasting behaviour change.

Over 25 years experience in learning and development has taught us, above all else, that behaviour change is a journey.  Our Steps to Change methodology upholds this belief – with the understanding that learners need to See and Own the behaviours they are currently displaying before they can Change and Live new ones.

Drama is at the heart of what we do. We believe drama is unrivalled in its ability to reflect organisational reality and uniquely powerful in representing the behaviours, characters and challenges that commonly hold organisations back. However, there is no single way to achieve your outcomes. Whether it is engaging your Leadership Team or developing an initiative that needs to reach many thousands of people globally, we use a variety of effective experiential approaches, all of which are entirely bespoke and outcome-focused.

Steps to Change

Our Steps to Change use creative techniques appropriate to each stage of the change process, helping your people to:

See It – to see with fresh eyes what is happening now and to explore how it could be better.

Own It – to become enthusiastic to develop their own skills and change their ways of working.

Change It – to acquire the new skills and ways of working that they need.

Live It – embed these new ways of working for the long term.

Working in partnership with you

Our commitment to you it to always work in partnership. We’ll challenge your thinking, we’ll bring fresh ideas and we’ll be honest – while always ensuring working with us is enjoyable, friendly and professional.

We are responsive and dynamic your needs (even if they change!) and our robust in house team will support you as trusted advisors. We thrive on conversation – so we’re always just a call or an email away.

We have a wealth of experience in cultural learning styles we use this insight in designing global programmes in partnership with our clients. Depending on the requirement, our programmes guide participants on a behaviour change journey using Steps to Change in a number of different ways:

  1. Live on the ground by a local team (delivering in the local language if needed).
  2. By a global team who deliver in a number of different locations.
  3. Creating bespoke media and using digital techniques. These can include train-the-trainer programmes, e-learning, video resources and virtual delivery, and can be tailored to different markets, regions, languages, etc.

Cultural insight and awareness

We have core staff located worldwide, with hubs or offices in London, UK, Pune, India, New York City, USA, Continental Europe and Asia Pacific.
