Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale – 11-Item (KADS-11)

The Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale – 11-Item (KADS-11) is a self-report questionnaire designed to assess the severity of depressive symptoms in adolescents aged 12 to 17. Developed by Dr. Stan Kutcher, the scale focuses on mood, behavior, and cognitive changes experienced over the past week, making it suitable for both clinical and educational settings.
How to Take the KADS-11 Assessment
The KADS-11 consists of 11 questions, each rated on a 4-point scale:
-
0 – Hardly ever
-
1 – Much of the time
-
2 – Most of the time
-
3 – All of the time
Respondents are asked to reflect on their experiences over the last week. The total score, ranging from 0 to 33, indicates the severity of depressive symptoms, with higher scores suggesting more severe depression.

Please note that while the KADS-11 is a valuable screening tool, it is not a substitute for professional diagnosis. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of depression, it’s important to consult a qualified mental health professional for a comprehensive evaluation.
