Defining the Problem

Definition:  A problem is a situation that is judged as something that needs to be corrected – implies that a state of “wholeness” does not exist.

Importance: It is our job to make sure we’re solving the right problem – it may not be the one presented to us by the client. What do we really need to solve?

Basic Concepts:

  • Most of the problems are initially identified by our clients, who serve as invaluable partners in uncovering the challenges and opportunities within their organizations.
  • Defining the problem clearly is not just a preliminary step; it’s the cornerstone that improves focus and drives the analytical process forward with purpose. It’s akin to shining a spotlight on the heart of the matter, guiding us through the maze of data and complexities toward meaningful insights.
  • Getting to a clearly defined problem is often a journey of discovery, a process where we start with a conceptual understanding and then embark on a thorough analysis journey. Through techniques such as root cause analysis, impact assessments, and stakeholder consultations, we refine and reshape the initial problem definition, capturing nuances and complexities along the way. This iterative process ensures that our solutions are not just superficial remedies but address the underlying issues at their core, aligning closely with the needs and objectives of our clients.
