How hosting 2036 Olympics will ruin India? | Economic Case study

Hi everybody, The Paris Olympics are currently taking the world by storm. US viewership of only the opening ceremony saw a total of 41.5 million viewers, India is expected to see 150 million viewers on JioCinema alone and India is winning a medal every single week!!! And India is winning medal after medal in the Paris olympics!! And amongst this hype, Nita Ambani, announced India’s interest in hosting the Summer Olympics in 2036. Now this seems like an insane move right?? We could host one of the biggest events in the world, millions of tourists would flock to India, India would become the epicentre enter of global attention, tourism would increase, we would make millions of dollars and the entire world would witness the grand Indian growth story right?? Well not really!! Because you know the Olympics are an economic disaster!! You don’t believe me look at this, While Beijing’s 2008 Summer Olympics cost over $40 billion it generated only $3.6 billion in revenue!! While Vancouver’s Winter Games in 2010 cost $7.6 billion, it generated only $2.8 billion. And London’s Summer Games in 2012 cost $18 billion but only generated $5.2 billion in revenue!! So with each olympics, the host country bleeds with billion dollars in losses!! So the question is, How can such a grand world event become a loss making venture? Why is there such a false hype around the economics of olympics? And most importantly, even with so much losses, why do nations still spend billions to host the olympics?
