Ontological Arrogance!
Ontological arrogance is a pervasive issue we encounter daily.
Ontology, the branch of philosophy that explores what truly exists, reveals a troubling mindset among some individuals. These ‘know-it-all’ types assert that only what they can see or hear is real. They fail to differentiate between personal opinions and objective truth, believing their experiences represent the ultimate reality. This perspective stifles diversity of thought, as they dismiss any viewpoint that deviates from their own. Evidence and alternative perspectives hold no weight for them.
In a world characterized by diverse opinions, it is essential to value this richness of thought. However, ‘Ontologically Arrogant Managers’—and we all know at least one—use their power to impose their views on their teams. They forget that each perspective offers only a limited view of the larger picture.
As Kofman notes in ‘Conscious Business,’ when unconditional blame, essential selfishness, and ontological arrogance become the toxic foundation of an organization, they lead to detrimental interactions, including:
– Manipulative communications
– Narcissistic negotiations
– Negligent coordination
It is important to reflect on our own behavior. After reading this, consider whether your team might be labeling you as their Ontologically Arrogant Manager !
