The Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS)

The Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) is a clinical assessment tool developed in the 1970s by Young et al. to evaluate the severity of manic symptoms. It is widely used in both research and clinical settings to assess manic episodes, particularly in individuals with bipolar disorder. The scale consists of 11 items, each focusing on different aspects of mania such as elevated mood, increased motor activity-energy, sexual interest, sleep, irritability, and speech patterns. Each item is rated on a scale, typically ranging from 0 to 4 or 0 to 8, allowing for a nuanced measurement of symptoms. The total score can range from 0 to 60, with higher scores indicating more severe manic symptoms.

How to Take the Assessment

While the YMRS is traditionally administered by clinicians through interviews and observations, a self-assessment version is available online. This version has been slightly reworded for self-administration; however, it’s important to note that self-assessment may not be as accurate, as individuals experiencing mania might struggle to objectively evaluate their symptoms.

To complete the assessment:

  1. Visit the YMRS self-assessment page: Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS).

  2. You will encounter 11 groups of statements, each pertaining to a specific symptom area.

  3. For each group, select the statement that best describes how you’ve been feeling over the past week.

  4. After completing all items, the tool will provide a total score, indicating the severity of manic symptoms.

Please remember that this self-assessment is not a diagnostic tool. If your results suggest significant manic symptoms, it’s advisable to consult a mental health professional for a comprehensive evaluation.
