Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ)

What is the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ)?
The Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ) is a self-report tool created in 2009 to measure emotional empathy—your instinctive ability to feel and respond to others’ emotions. It consists of 16 statements reflecting real-life emotional reactions and is widely used in both research and clinical practice.
-
Format: 16 items on a 5‑point scale (Never → Always)
-
Time required: ~5–7 minutes
-
Scoring:
-
Responses scored 0–4.
-
Reverse-scored items (8 of the 16) are flipped before totaling.
-
Total empathy score ranges from 0 to 64, with 45 or above considered above-average.
-
📋 How to Take the TEQ
-
Settle in for about 5–7 minutes — you’ll need uninterrupted time.
-
Read each statement carefully, then select the frequency that best reflects you: Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Often, Always.
-
Answer honestly — there are no right or wrong choices.
-
Submit your responses — the scoring is automatic, providing a total empathy score instantly.
-
Review your result:
-
Score ≥ 45: higher-than-average emotional empathy
-
Lower scores: may indicate lower emotional empathy levels.
