HR Learning of the Day SBI Model of Feedback
The SBI Model of Feedback (Situation-Behavior-Impact) is a structured approach to delivering feedback effectively. It helps ensure clarity, objectivity, and constructive dialogue, reducing defensiveness and improving workplace communication.
Components of the SBI Model:
1. Situation (S) – Describe the specific context or event where the behavior occurred.
2. Behavior (B) – State the observable actions of the individual without judgment.
3. Impact (I) – Explain the effect of the behavior on you, the team, or the organization.
Example in HRM Context:
Situation: “In yesterday’s client presentation…”
Behavior: “You interrupted the client multiple times before they could finish their questions.”
Impact: “This made the client feel unheard and affected our ability to build rapport.”
Benefits in HRM:
Encourages clear, non-judgmental feedback.
Reduces misunderstandings and defensive reactions.
Enhances performance management and employee development.
