“Son, my phone doesn’t retain its charge. Can you buy me a new one?” my mom asked.
“Sure, which one would you want?” I replied.
“Buy me something very similar, one that is simple and easy to use; I already have another phone,” she said. She had a simple feature phone, apart from a smartphone.
“Okay, Mom, let me see what I can buy,” I told her.
After some research, I bought the Nokia 5310. Nokia phones today are manufactured by HMD. Unboxing the phone took me back two decades to when I purchased my first mobile phone, the Nokia 3315, with my first salary. That era, when even incoming calls were charged, and phones were known for their durability, seems like a distant memory. Although I’ve owned many smartphones since only a few have retained the nostalgic charm and simplicity of those early Nokia models.
The smartphone ecosystem has evolved dramatically over the last 20 years. Nokia and BlackBerry, once at the pinnacle of the industry, now find themselves overshadowed by Apple and various Android devices.
These shifts in the tech landscape offer profound lessons in personal leadership and adaptability. Here are the key takeaways from their journeys:
➡ Embrace Change: As smartphones emerged, Nokia and BlackBerry were industry leaders. Nokia remained committed to its Symbian OS, and BlackBerry delayed embracing touchscreens, which eventually significantly hindered its market share. They underscore the importance of flexibility and the readiness to embrace change in both business and personal growth.
➡ Focus on Your Customer: Both companies made the critical error of assuming they knew better than their customers, focusing on presumed needs rather than actual demands. Effective leaders listen attentively to their audience, ensuring their offerings align with real-world needs.
➡Learn and Adapt from Setbacks: Eventually, both companies recognized their mistakes—Nokia adopted the Windows OS, and BlackBerry pivoted to software and security services. The capacity to learn from errors and adjust strategies is vital in any leadership journey.
➡Innovate Continuously: Staying relevant requires constant innovation. Leaders should cultivate a culture of creativity within their teams to anticipate and lead market trends.
➡Maintain Clear Vision and Values: Amid rapid technological advancements, keeping a clear focus on your core vision and values is crucial. This focus guides strategic decisions and helps navigate competitive pressures.
What did I learn?
➡Adapt your strategies while staying true to your core values.
➡Be proactive, not reactive.
➡Embrace continuous learning and flexibility. The constant evolution in the ever-disruptive tech world reminds us that our leadership methods must also progress.
