• Understanding the Johari Window: A Tool for Personal Development and Improved Communication

The Johari Window is a visual framework that helps people improve their relationships and communication skills, and promote personal development.

It was created in 1955 by psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham, and is often used in corporate settings and self-help groups as a heuristic exercise.

The Johari Window is divided into four quadrants, where participants categorize personal attributes:

      • Open area: Things that both you and others know about you
      • Blind area: Things that others know about you, but you don’t
      • Hidden area: Things that you know about yourself, but others don’t
      • Unknown area: Things that neither you nor others know about yourself

The Johari Window can help you develop self-awareness and understand how others experience you in interactions. For example, you can expand your open area by learning more about yourself, such as finding new skills, perspectives, and preferences. You can also bring information from the unknown area into the hidden area by self-disclosing more about yourself to others.
