NODS – CLiP

What is the NODS‑CLiP?
-
NODS stands for the NORC DSM–IV Screen for Gambling Problems, the full version includes 17 items.
-
CLiP is a rapid, 3-question screener derived from NODS that targets core behaviors: Control, Lying, Preoccupation.
Designed for quick implementation in clinics or surveys, answering yes to any one item suggests possible problem gambling and flags the need for further evaluation.
🔍 The Three Questions
-
Preoccupation: “Have there been periods (lasting 2+ weeks) when you spent a lot of time thinking about gambling or planning your next bets?”
-
Attempts to Control: “Have you ever tried to stop, cut down, or control your gambling?”
-
Lying: “Have you ever lied to family, friends, or others about how much you gamble or how much money you lost?”
Answering “yes” to any of these suggests further screening is needed.
🧭 Why Use It?
-
Speed & simplicity: It’s just 3 quick questions, ideal for busy settings.
-
High sensitivity: Nearly all individuals with severe gambling problems are detected.
-
Good specificity: It effectively rules out non-problem gamblers with few false alarms.
-
It’s especially useful as a first-line screener, reserving longer assessments for those who screen positive .
📌 When It’s Less Ideal
While excellent at catching severe cases, it may miss individuals with milder or emerging gambling issues, making it less suitable for preventive outreach.
